Munmugyeomjeonron(ÙþÙëÌÂîïÖå) and Publishment of Military Tactical Manual by King Jeongjo
Choi, Hyeong-Guk
(Lecturer of Da Vinci College of General Education, Chung-ang University)
This paper studies the relationship and meaning of Munmugyeomjeonron (The theory of literary and military accomplishments) and military tactics publishment among political philosophies of Jeongjo, the twenty-second King of Joseon Dynasty. In particular, the directivity of political domination that appeared during Jeongjo Era was approached from recognition of distinguished families with vested rights, finding specific solutions to this problem through military ethos. Particularly based on strong criticism on and reinterpretation of Neo-Confucianism, existing authorities placed psychological pressure on literary arts and made a focusing of 'Military accomplishments' new national political operations by propagation of Munmugyeonjeonron. In addition, spread of military ethos at the time was shown to have used as highly developed political strategies by detailed analysis on books during King Jeongjo Era containing military tactics such as Daejeontongpyun Byeonghaktong, Muyedobotongji, and Headongmyeonjangjeon. This paper also attempted to further expand the range of existing studies on King Jeongjo by proposing expansion of military ethos by King Jeongjo as a ¡®military king¡¯ in addition to his original acknowledgement as a ¡®literary king.¡¯
