A Stduy on the change of Japanese sword-fight in the later period of the Choseon dynasty

                                                                                                                       Choi hyeong guk

This study will observe the introduction and the process of variation of Japanese sword-fight which trained in the later period of the Choseon dynasty begin with Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. It was a large scale of war which three Asia nations - Choseon(朝鮮), Ming(明) and Japan(日本) -  participated in. The things that they influenced each other most in the middle of the war would be the strategy, tactics of the war and the military arts of soldiers. As mentioned above,  A firelock and Japanese sword which were the speciality of Japan were enough to allow Japan to predominate in the early times of the war. Especially, Japanese sword stroke the most terrible blow against the Choseon and Ming Allies priding itself on the strongest power of hand-to-hand fight. In such a situation, the Choseon dynasty extended the martial arts of Ming and Japan toward the Choseon army according to strengthen hand-to-hand martial arts of soldiers. This study will make an attempt to inspect in what way the Japanese sword fight method which is a Japanese military arts diffused in Choseon and thereafter through which process of change settled down in Choseon, contradicting and examining Japanese sword-fight method of "Muye-jebo-bunyek-sogzip" and "Muye-dobo-tongji".
In conclusion, Japanese sword-fight of the later sixteenth century and the later eighteenth century, that is Japanese sword-fight which was recorded in "Muye-jebo-bunyek-sogzip" and "Muye-dobo-tongji" are similar in their basic form of sword fighting, but they are so different that can not find any common features in using of techniques. This is due to the fact that in the case of later sixteenth century, it is propagated by anti-Japanese soldiers and popularized to Choseon military in order to guard against the hand-to-hand fight of Japanese soldiers urgently. On the other hand, in later eighteenth century, Japanese sword-fight was propagated by a military officer named Kim CheGeon and  the "Choseonizated" Japanese sword-fight was created based on the battle method of Japanese sword in the process of it. In addition, the postures and terms of Japanese sword-fight which was recorded in "Muye-jebo-bunyek-sogzip" were borrowed those of Chinese rod and long sword to be arranged. And in the case of Japanese sword-fight printed in "Muye-dobo-tongji" could regard as forming a part of ensuring the basic techniques notion of "Choseonizated" sword rather than its terms of postures.
